New Bill Proposes Professional Regulation for Dietitians

A new parliamentary bill has been introduced in the Sejm to officially classify dietitians as independent medical professionals, establishing formal education requirements, a professional chamber, and legal title protection.

Comprehensive Reform for Dietitians

The dietetics sector is approaching a long-awaited transformation. A new bill submitted to the Sejm aims to standardize the profession in Poland by defining professional competencies, establishing the right to practice, and creating a governing body.

Independent Medical Profession Status

The legislation formally classifies dietitians as independent medical professionals. For the first time, this proposal sets comprehensive rules for qualification requirements and the organization of a professional self-governing chamber.

Establishment of the National Chamber of Dietitians

The bill mandates the creation of the National Chamber of Dietitians. This body will be responsible for maintaining a registry of licensed professionals, overseeing practice standards, and managing professional liability. Membership will be compulsory for all practicing dietitians.

Legal Protection of the Professional Title

Usage of the title “dietitian” will be strictly limited to those who have obtained the official right to practice. The law also extends protection to specialist titles and introduces penalties for the unauthorized use of these designations.

Educational and Licensing Requirements

Under the proposed framework, the title will eventually require a five-year master’s degree in dietetics. Transitional provisions are included to allow current practitioners from various educational backgrounds to retain their rights, with licensing granted by the National Council of Dietitians.

Mandatory Professional Development

The bill mandates continuous professional development, requiring dietitians to participate in regular training and education. Professionals will be entitled to six days of paid training leave per year, with compliance assessed in five-year cycles.

Legislative Status

The proposal was introduced as a parliamentary initiative by a group of Poland 2050 deputies. The provisions are not yet law and remain subject to further parliamentary debate and potential amendment.
