New Details on Leipzig Airport Attack Reveal Complex Military Operation

Bild reports that a recent explosive drone incident near Leipzig/Halle Airport was a sophisticated military operation orchestrated by a coordinated team.

The Drone Incident at Leipzig/Halle Airport

A drone carrying an explosive charge flew near the southern runway of the Leipzig/Halle Airport during the night of August 4 to 5, where transport planes—including four Ukrainian Antonovs, according to Der Spiegel—were located. The unmanned aerial vehicle was spotted by a bus driver who got out of his vehicle, ran up to the machine, and then kicked it, knocking it to the ground.

Shortly afterward, a DHL plane collided with an unidentified obstacle in the air, which was most likely also a drone, Bild reported. Ultimately, the pilot landed safely in Hanover, where Deutschlandfunk radio reported that minor damage was discovered on the front part of the aircraft.

A Second Drone and Coordinated Team

According to Bild journalists, authorities suspect that in addition to the armed drone, there was a second tactical drone acting as a mother ship that maintained contact with the aforementioned UAV. Investigators are certain that both drones were coordinated and controlled by an experienced team from around the Leipzig airport, Bild wrote, making it possible that the event was not a standard incident, but an extremely complex military operation.

A Defective Fuse Foils the Plan

The plan ultimately failed because the armed drone did not explode. According to Bild, the reason was a defective fuse. Bartosz T.Wieliński emphasized on Wyborcza.pl that had an explosion occurred beneath a fueled plane, Ukraine would not only have lost valuable heavy transporters—having only 8 AN-124 machines—but the airport would also have been severely damaged.

Significance of the Attack and Political Reactions

German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt stated in an interview with Bild that the bomb plot at the airport was the action of a foreign power, though he did not name a specific country. In his view, the goal of this unspecified state is to defeat Germany politically and socially.

Wyborcza.pl pointed out that Leipzig-Halle is Germany’s second-largest cargo airport and a major German logistics hub through which aid for Ukraine, which is fighting Russia, passes.
