New Ombudsperson Sworn In: Sylwia Gregorczyk-Abram Takes Office
The opening event of Wednesday’s Sejm session was the official swearing-in of Sylwia Gregorczyk-Abram as the Ombudsperson. The prominent lawyer and social activist replaced Prof. Marcin Wi膮czek, whose five-year term expired on July 23. During her address to MPs, the new Ombudsperson declared uncompromising protection of civil liberties and the principles of equal treatment. After the procedure in the plenary hall, the new ombudsperson received her appointment act from Sejm Marshal W艂odzimierz Czarzasty.
MP Wojciech Kr贸l’s Immunity: Committee Gives Green Light but Rejects Arrest Request
The meeting of the Sejm Rules, Deputies’ Affairs and Immunity Committee was turbulent. After hours of debate with European Chief Prosecutor Laura K枚vesi, the committee recommended waiving the immunity of KO MP Wojciech Kr贸l in connection with allegations of paid patronage in public procurement. Simultaneously, the majority of MPs voted against the motion to consent to his detention and temporary arrest. The final decision on the immunity will be made by the entire chamber during a plenary vote.
Shuffling on Wiejska Street: Application for Registration of the “Rozw贸j Plus” Parliamentary Club
Wednesday brought the official sealing of changes on the parliamentary map. A formal application to establish the new “Rozw贸j Plus” Parliamentary Club, bringing together MPs associated with former Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki, was submitted to the Sejm Marshal. Politicians representing the formation confirmed the completion of formal requirements. The new club will gain its own representation in the work of the Sejm Presidium and in parliamentary committees.
Implementation of the EU Digital Services Act (DSA): UKE to Gain New Competencies
The Sejm Committee on Digitalization, Innovation and Modern Technologies supported the draft amendment to the Act on the Provision of Services by Electronic Means. The amendment adapts Polish legal order to the EU DSA regulation and designates the President of the Office of Electronic Communications (UKE) as the national coordinator for digital services. The project provides mechanisms for quickly blocking illegal online content and imposes new reporting and organizational obligations on internet platform providers.
End of “Healers”: Health Committee Supports “Lex Charlatan”
The Health Committee voted in favor of adopting the government draft amendment to the Patient Rights Act. Built around the concept of combating dangerous pseudomedical practices, the regulations (known as Lex Charlatan) introduce a ban on offering therapies inconsistent with medical knowledge under the threat of high financial penalties and criminal liability. The law also regulates the market of herbal medicine and natural medicine preparations.
Judicial Supervision of Special Services and the Status of OSP Rescue Dogs
