Starting January 1, 2027, the National Health Fund plans to overhaul spa treatment rules in Poland, replacing standardized procedures with individualized therapies tailored to patients’ specific medical diagnoses.

NFZ changes spa treatment from 2027. The patient is to receive therapy tailored to the disease. The National Health Fund wants to rebuild the principles of spa treatment. The draft assumes moving away from the “same treatments for everyone” scheme in favor of therapy tailored to age, diagnosis, and the therapeutic direction of the health resort. The changes are to apply from January 1, 2027, if consultations end and the draft is adopted.

The biggest change will be felt by patients when planning therapy. At the same project provides for the liquidation of the 5-percent financial factor for health resorts, which may spark a discussion about the financing of the entire system.

Individualized Treatment Programs Introduced

Changes in spas 2027. NFZ introduces an individual treatment program. The draft ordinance of the President of NFZ of July 20, 2026, changes the way spa treatment is organized. Each service provider will have to prepare a treatment program taking into account the patient’s age, diagnosis, and a catalog of treatments corresponding to a specific therapeutic direction. Such a solution appears directly in the draft and its justification.

The authors of the document argue that thanks to this it will be easier to assess the effectiveness of therapy, and at the same time more rationally spend public money. From the patient’s perspective, this means moving away from a situation where two people with different ailments receive a very similar set of treatments. The spa has a greater obligation to match therapy to the health problem, rather than solely to the type of stay.

New Procedure Catalogs and Age Divisions

New treatments in spas 2027. NFZ published a catalog of therapeutic procedures. One of the most important elements of the project is a catalog of treatments using natural therapeutic raw materials, assigned to specific treatment directions. Materials show that procedures are to be more closely linked to the spa profile and patient diagnosis. The project contains an extensive table assigning treatments to individual ailments. The project also provides for a clearer separation of treatments for children and adults. In some cases, specific procedures will be able to be performed exclusively on adult patients.

Impact on Patients and Ongoing Wait Times

What will change for spa patients? Who will actually gain from the new rules. The greatest benefit seems to be greater individualization of therapy. For a person referred to a spa, this means a greater chance for treatment corresponding to a specific ailment, rather than solely to the general profile of the spa. Possible benefits for patients:

At the same time, the project does not provide for shortening queues to spas or increasing the number of places. It also does not change the rules for referring patients by NFZ. In this regard, the current system remains unchanged.

Financing Changes and Elimination of the 1.05 Factor

NFZ changes spa financing. The 5-percent factor for health resorts disappears. This is an element of the project that may cause the most discussion among service providers. The project repeals the application of the 1.05 correction factor, thanks to which health resorts received higher financing for settled services. After the change, settlements are to take place according to the standard 1.0 factor.

In the justification, NFZ indicates that this is to organize the method of financing spa services. This does not automatically mean a deterioration of patients’ stay conditions, because the project does not provide for limiting the catalog of services. However, some spa market experts may point out that lower financing will require greater organizational efficiency on the part of facilities. The project does not analyze such effects.

When will the rules of treatment in spas change? Date of entry into force. For now, we are talking about a draft ordinance of the President of NFZ, which has been sent for consultation. The document assumes that the new regulations will apply to services provided from January 1, 2027, and NFZ voivodeship branches will have to appropriately change existing contracts with spas. The final shape of the regulations may still change after consultations end.

Trip to the spa after changes. What does the new project mean for patients? If the project is adopted without major changes, the patient will not have to submit new applications or go through an additional qualification procedure. Changes mainly concern the way treatment is organized by service providers. For example, a person referred to a health resort with a chronic respiratory disease may receive a set of treatments based mainly on inhalations and procedures provided for this particular therapeutic direction, instead of the more universal program used previously.
