Norway Facing Image Crisis as Verdict Looms for Crown Princess’s Son

Marius Borg Hoeiby, the 29-year-old son of Norway’s Crown Princess Mette-Marit, awaits a verdict today in Oslo regarding charges of rape, violence, and drug trafficking that have rocked the monarchy.

The Charges and Prosecution Demand

The trial of Marius Borg Hoeiby, which ran from February 3 to March 19, involves 40 charges spanning 2018 to 2024. The most serious allegations include four counts of rape, as well as physical and psychological abuse, property damage, and drug trafficking.

While the maximum potential penalty for the most serious crimes could reach 16 years, the prosecution has requested a sentence of seven years and seven months in prison.

Evidence and Court Proceedings

Over 70 witnesses were called during the proceedings, with evidence including 830 pages of messages and over 10,000 pages of documentation. Notable figures, including journalist Danby Choi, actress Mia Gundersen, and influencer Sophie Elise, provided testimony.

Although Hoeiby holds no royal title or official duties, his case has severely damaged the image of the Norwegian royal family. The institution is already under scrutiny following revelations regarding Princess Mette-Marit’s past ties to Jeffrey Epstein and ongoing scandals involving Princess Märtha Louise and her husband, Durek Verrett.

Personal Crisis Amidst Legal Proceedings

The verdict coincides with reports of a significant decline in the health of Crown Princess Mette-Marit. Currently suffering from a severe lung condition, she was placed on a transplant waiting list last week, with medical professionals estimating she has approximately one year to live without a successful procedure.
