Pensioner ID Cards: July 2026 Changes and Benefits Explained

The pensioner ID card is a key document that confirms the right to retirement benefits and opens access to a series of reliefs and privileges. ZUS issues it after acquiring the right to a pension, that is, upon reaching retirement age (60 for women, 65 for men) or meeting other statutory conditions.

What discounts and entitlements does the pensioner ID card grant?

Thanks to the ID card, retirees and disability pensioners can use a wide package of reliefs and lower fees. Discounts include health and medicines, transport and communication, the TV subscription fee, official matters, as well as daily shopping and services.

How to Obtain the Pensioner ID Card?

Persons applying for a pension or disability pension, after a positive review of the application, automatically receive an mID (mLegitymacja), which is the electronic version in the mObywatel application. Since January 2023, seniors can add the pensioner ID card document in mObywatel after logging in, without an additional application.

The paper version is issued exclusively upon request using the ERL form. The document can be collected at a ZUS branch or received by mail. The plastic card is no longer the primary channel, as the mID is now the main form of document used by nearly 1.5 million beneficiaries.

Changes Starting July 2026

Starting Monday, July 13, 2026, ZUS began issuing pensioner ID cards according to a completely new design. The well-known white-and-green card is a thing of the past, replaced by a gray-blue document with security features used in official documents.

Do You Need to Replace Your Old ID Card?

There is no need to replace the old document. If you hold a valid ID card issued according to the previous design, you can continue to use it without concern. The regulatory change does not invalidate previously issued documents, meaning ZUS is not withdrawing old cards from circulation. All ID cards issued on previous blanks remain valid for the period indicated on them, and for the next few years both old green and new gray-blue cards will function in parallel and be honored equally.

Who Receives the New Document?

The new ID card goes to three groups of people, while the application for a plastic card (ERL form) is submitted when you genuinely need a new document rather than every time the design changes. Obtaining the card is free of charge.

For ZUS, the digital version is now the primary channel. The pensioner ID card mID is issued automatically to anyone acquiring the right to a pension or disability pension from ZUS, whereas the plastic card is issued exclusively upon request.
