Following a Belgian court ruling, pharmaceutical giant Pfizer has frozen the assets of the Polish Air Navigation Agency held at Eurocontrol in Brussels to recover debts from a 2022 vaccine contract dispute.
Escalating Legal Conflict
A judicial dispute between the Polish government and Pfizer has reached a critical stage. The pharmaceutical company has successfully moved to seize funds belonging to the Polish Air Navigation Agency (PAŻP) held in Brussels-based Eurocontrol accounts, following a primary court verdict issued on April 1, 2026.
The conflict stems from Poland’s 2022 decision to terminate a centralized vaccine supply contract negotiated by the European Commission. The Belgian court ruled that Poland had no legal grounds for unilateral withdrawal, ordering the state to accept 64 million vaccine doses and pay approximately 5.64 billion PLN, plus nearly 170 million PLN in legal costs.
Pfizer’s Justification
In an official statement, Pfizer defended its actions, asserting that the Belgian court judgment upholds essential contractual obligations foundational to the European pandemic response. The company confirmed it is utilizing established legal enforcement mechanisms to secure the funds after no voluntary payment was made by the Polish State Treasury.
PAŻP Response and Legal Hurdles
The Polish Air Navigation Agency has categorically distanced itself from the government-level dispute, declaring that the proceedings are entirely unrelated to its operations. The agency is now preparing a formal objection to the seizure, aiming to recover financial liquidity and prove that the assets of an independent agency cannot be held as collateral for state debts.
The Ministry of Health, representing the State Treasury, has until August 2026 to file an appeal following the formal delivery of the enforceable court order. Lawyers for the Polish side must now move quickly to challenge the seizure and mitigate the impact on the national aviation sector.
