PiS Rift Deepens: Over 60 Percent of Poles Doubt Party’s Return to Power Without Morawiecki

Following a major split over Mateusz Morawiecki’s new association, a new poll reveals that the vast majority of Poles do not believe PiS can return to power without them.

Mass Departure of MPs from PiS

On Friday, July 24, Jarosław Kaczyński announced that “thirty-odd” PiS MPs had “resigned their membership” from the party. This concerned individuals who refused to leave the Rozwój Plus association, established by Mateusz Morawiecki, and failed to sign the corresponding declaration. On Tuesday, July 28, the PiS Political Committee is set to confirm their departure. Morawiecki specified that Rozwój Plus includes 40 MPs, a senator, and three MEPs.

Public Skepticism Over Electoral Prospects

“Super Express” decided to ask whether Poles believe PiS can return to power without Morawiecki and the members of the Rozwój Plus association in the 2027 parliamentary elections. A poll conducted by the Pollster Research Institute shows that as many as 62 percent of respondents do not believe in such a possibility. The opposite view is held by 38 percent of people.

If the former prime minister and his party win 5-8 percent in next year’s elections, it will become one of the players on the right, alongside Confederation. Defense of Government Achievements

Morawiecki stated that the Rozwój Plus association was created to defend the achievements of our governments. On July 15, the PiS presidium adopted a resolution on the “ban on activities and participation of party members in associations, foundations, and other organizations of a political nature.” As PiS spokesperson Rafał Bochenek stated, the decision applies to, among others, Mateusz Morawiecki’s Rozwój Plus and Jacek Sasin’s Po pierwsze Polska. Their members had seven days to resign from the organizations’ ranks.

Contrasting Faction Fates and Statements

Sasin’s association subordinated itself to the will of the party authorities. However, Morawiecki announced that Rozwój Plus would continue its activity. On Tuesday, July 21, the former prime minister published an almost ten-minute statement on social media. The former prime minister argues in it that the Rozwój Plus association was created “not to divide the right,” but to “defend the achievements of our governments” and “broaden support.”

International Media Commentary on the Split

Global media have weighed in on the PiS split, describing it as self-demolition. According to “Politico,” the split in the dominant party of the Polish right shortly before the parliamentary elections significantly weakens the chances of the entire conservative camp to remove Donald Tusk from power.

Public Preference Between Morawiecki and Czarnek

Meanwhile, last week’s Opinia24 poll, conducted on commission for TVN and TVN24’s “Fakty,” shows that 30 percent of respondents see Mateusz Morawiecki as a future prime minister more than Przemysław Czarnek. Only 11 percent chose the former education minister, while 19 percent indicated “both to the same extent.” 40 percent of respondents “don’t know” or refused to answer the question.
