Poland Hits All-Time June Temperature Record as Dangerous Heatwave Persists

Poland has recorded its highest June temperature in history as Słubice reached 38.9 degrees Celsius, with forecasters warning that extreme heat could push temperatures even higher across the country this weekend.

Record-Breaking Heat

Dr. Grzegorz Duniec of the IMGW-PIB confirmed that a meteorological station in Słubice recorded 38.9 degrees Celsius on Saturday, June 27. While preliminary IMGW calculations suggest 38.5 degrees, the figure is subject to final verification.

This is the highest temperature ever recorded in Poland during June, surpassing the previous record of 38.3 degrees set in Ceber and Radzyń in 2019, and Słubice in 2022. Historically, the highest temperatures ever measured in Poland reached 40.5 degrees in Ścinawa in 1943, and 40.2 degrees in Prószków in 1921.

Severe Weather Alerts

The Institute of Meteorology and Water Management (IMGW) has issued third-degree warnings for eleven provinces, including Mazowieckie, Małopolskie, and Wielkopolskie. Second-degree alerts are in effect for parts of the northern and eastern regions of the country.

Forecasters warn that temperatures could peak on Sunday, potentially reaching 42 degrees Celsius in the west. Experts note a significant risk of approaching the historical national record of 40.2 degrees set in 1921.

Infrastructure Disruptions

The extreme heat has caused widespread service disruptions, including a major incident involving a train traveling from Zakopane to Gdynia. The train remained stranded for two hours near Januszowice due to technical failures.

Passengers reported people fainting inside the overheated carriages, forcing some to exit onto the tracks. Local firefighters and police were deployed to provide water to those stranded during the ongoing heatwave.
