Poland Proposes 20 Billion Zloty EU Funding for Healthcare Overhaul

Minister of Funds and Regional Policy Katarzyna Pełczyńska-Nałęcz announced in Krokowa that Poland could allocate 20 billion zloty from the next EU budget to finance a comprehensive, long-term systemic healthcare reform.

A Critical Need for Systemic Change

During a press conference held at a childcare center funded by the National Recovery Plan in Krokowa, Minister Katarzyna Pełczyńska-Nałęcz addressed the ongoing crisis in the Polish healthcare sector. She argued that the current situation stems from years of government hesitation to engage in systemic reform, as politicians historically viewed such changes as political suicide.

The minister emphasized that the country has hit a wall and that reform is now mandatory. She identified the elimination of excessive pay disparities as a necessary initial step in this long-term process, noting that such institutional shifts typically require years to implement effectively.

Funding the Future of Healthcare

Pełczyńska-Nałęcz confirmed she has consulted with the Minister of Health regarding the financial framework for these changes. She stated that the government is prepared to earmark 20 billion zloty from Poland’s future European Union budget allocation specifically to support a deep, systemic transformation of the healthcare system.

The minister clarified that while the current administration would secure the funding, the actual implementation of the reforms would need to be carried out over the next four to five years, regardless of which political party holds power in future terms.
