Historical Temperature Records
The previous national temperature record of 40.2 degrees Celsius was set on July 29, 1921, in Prószków. This long-standing record was officially surpassed on Sunday, June 28, when thermometers at the Toruń weather station hit 40.3 degrees Celsius at 4:00 PM.
Just one day prior, on Saturday, a new record for the highest temperature ever recorded in Poland during the month of June was set in Słubice, where the mercury reached 38.9 degrees Celsius. Meteorologists confirmed this peak was repeated on Sunday at 3:00 PM.
Severe Weather Warnings
The Institute of Meteorology and Water Management (IMGW) has issued second-degree weather warnings for Sunday, June 28, specifically for regions in western Poland. Forecasts indicate rainfall between 20 and 30 mm, with local accumulation up to 40 mm, accompanied by wind gusts of 90 to 100 km/h and hail.
Health Risks and Safety Measures
Current atmospheric conditions pose significant risks of dehydration and heatstroke, as air temperatures exceed body temperature. Meteorologists advise that very hot air masses will persist in Poland, urging the public to monitor weather warnings and exercise caution while outdoors.
The Ministry of Health recommends avoiding outdoor activities between 3:00 PM and 6:00 PM. If going out is necessary, the ministry suggests wearing light, breathable clothing, using head protection, and applying sunscreen. Drivers are advised to take frequent breaks.
To protect indoor environments, citizens are urged to close windows and blinds during the day, opening them only at night when temperatures drop. Nutritional advice includes avoiding fatty, high-calorie foods and alcohol, while maintaining strict hygiene to prevent salmonella infections. In case of concerning health symptoms, residents should contact emergency services at 112.
