Polish Police Crack Down on Electric Scooters as Fines Hit 5,000 PLN

Across Poland, traffic police are conducting intensive operations targeting electric scooter violations, issuing heavy fines for speeding, drunk driving, and ignoring new mandatory helmet laws.

Nationwide Traffic Police Crackdown on Electric Scooters

Traffic police are conducting ruthless preventive and control operations, catching violations on roads and sidewalks. During recent operations under the codenames “E-bike” and “Don’t HULAJ Safety,” officers inspected 55 electric scooter users in just two days and imposed numerous financial penalties. Many users are unaware of the rules, resulting in fines ranging from several hundred to over a thousand zlotys.

Costly Violations and 16 Fines in Piasecono

During just two days of operations in Piasecono, officers uncovered a series of serious road traffic offenses. The inspection balance proved exceptionally strict, with officers issuing 16 fines totaling nearly 5,000 zlotys. According to press officer junior inspector Magdalena Gąsowska, the most common offenses committed by drivers included alcohol use and drastic speeding.

Drunk Driving and Extreme Speeding Lead to a 1,200 PLN Fine

Among those inspected were individuals who displayed extreme irresponsibility and disregarded basic safety standards. One example is a 31-year-old man riding a scooter at 31 km/h, while the regulations allow a maximum speed of up to 20 km/h. Additionally, the vehicle did not meet admission requirements, and the driver was under the influence of alcohol, resulting in a 1,200 PLN fine. In another case, a 25-year-old with over 0.5 permille of alcohol in his system was heavily fined and forced to continue his journey on foot.

Helmets Now Mandatory for Minors Under 16

During these operations, traffic police reminded all road users about a significant regulation amendment that entered into force on June 3rd of this year. According to the new law, a protective helmet has become strictly mandatory equipment for individuals under 16 years of age who ride electric scooters or other designated devices. Police have announced that such mass inspection operations will be regularly repeated in other towns and regions of the country.
