Political Earthquake in Lithuania: Mindaugas Sinkevičius Set to Lead Government

Following the resignation of Prime Minister Inga Ruginienė and her cabinet this Tuesday, Lithuanian Social Democratic leader Mindaugas Sinkevičius has been tapped to form a new government and take the helm.

Cabinet Resignation and Transition

The Lithuanian government, led by Social Democrat Inga Ruginienė, officially tendered its resignation on Tuesday. The resignation, approved unanimously, will be formally submitted to President Gitanas Nausėda, who will instruct the cabinet to continue its duties until a successor is appointed.

During the final government meeting, Prime Minister Ruginienė acknowledged the efforts of her cabinet, stating that despite various difficulties, there is reason for pride in the contributions made toward national welfare and the improvement of public life.

The Road to a New Government

According to the constitution, President Nausėda has 15 days to nominate a new prime minister to parliament. Mindaugas Sinkevičius, the leader of the Social Democratic Party, is the coalition’s designated candidate for the position.

Once approved by the Seimas, the incoming prime minister will have a maximum of 15 days to present a new cabinet and government program for presidential and parliamentary review.

Coalition Realignment

The new parliamentary majority, which holds 75 out of 141 seats, was formed after the Social Democrats severed ties with the Dawn of the Nemunas party. The coalition now includes the Social Democratic Party, the Union of Democrats “For Lithuania,” and the combined faction of the Lithuanian Farmers and Green Union and the Christian Families Union.

Under the new agreement, several ministries will change hands: the Democrats are slated to lead the agriculture, energy, and health sectors, while the Social Democrats will take over the Ministry of the Environment. Ruginienė is expected to transition into the role of Minister of Labor and Social Affairs.

Recent Political History

Following the autumn 2024 parliamentary elections, the Social Democrats initially formed a coalition with the Dawn of the Nemunas and the Union of Democrats. The structure shifted significantly on June 6, when the Social Democratic Party council decided to exclude the Dawn of the Nemunas and re-invite the Union of Democrats to join the ruling coalition.
