Unusual Visitor in Leoncin
An unusual event took place on Friday in the Leoncin municipality within the Nowy Dwór Mazowiecki county, where an exotic porcupine broke into a residential home. The animal was safely captured and handed over to the appropriate services, while efforts to locate its owner are currently underway.
Residents of a home in the Leoncin municipality encountered an unexpectedly unusual guest on Friday. A porcupine—an exotic animal that does not occur naturally in Polish fauna—managed to enter the building.
Capture and Prior Sightings Around Warsaw
Help was called to the scene, leading to the safe capture of the porcupine and its subsequent transfer to the care of relevant services, with the owner still being sought. Interestingly, this is not the first porcupine spotted in recent days around Warsaw and the Kampinos Forest.
On Thursday, the Hoof with Hope Foundation reported two individuals remaining at large, with one seen in Warsaw’s Bemowo district and another in Wiersze within the Czosnów municipality. Previously, another porcupine was captured in Łomianki, and according to foundation information, all three animals are believed to have escaped from the same location.
At this moment, there is no confirmation that the porcupine captured in the Leoncin municipality is one of the previously sought individuals.
Safety Guidelines Regarding Porcupines
The foundation appealed that in the event of encountering a porcupine, people should not attempt to catch it independently. The animal does not shoot its quills, but in a threatening situation, it can bristle them and use them for defense, causing serious injuries.
The Leoncin Municipality provided detailed instructions regarding encounters with the animal: On Friday morning, August 14, 2026, an unexpected guest appeared on a property in our municipality, first tasting garden plants and then entering the house as the owner reported its presence.
Instructions for Encounted Porcupines
What should you do if you see a porcupine? Do not try to catch or touch it, as it does not shoot quills, but when threatened, it can bristle them and rapidly turn its hindquarters toward an attacker, with contact causing serious injuries.
Maintain a safe distance, do not surround the animal, and leave it the opportunity to walk away. Do not provoke it with a dog; the dog must be immediately put on a leash and led away, since attempting to attack the porcupine can end with numerous quills embedded in the dog’s muzzle.
Do not try to herd it with sticks, nets, blankets, or other objects, because capturing such an animal requires appropriate equipment and experience. Do not feed it or try to lure it into a car, garage, or room.
If it is on the roadway, do not attempt to drive it across traffic by yourself; warn other drivers if possible and notify the appropriate services, such as the Municipal Office or emergency number 112. Particularly valuable details include the exact location, observation time, direction of movement, and—if safely possible—a photo or video taken from a distance, as reported by the Leoncin Municipality.
