Poznan Mayor Attacked with Cake; Jaśkowiak Blames MP Zawisza for Toxic Climate

During a Tuesday council session, the mayor of Poznan was hit with a cake by an assailant, prompting a heated exchange of accusations between Mayor Jacek Jaśkowiak and MP Marcelina Zawisza.

The Incident and Subsequent Arrests

The perpetrator of the Tuesday incident labeled his actions a “vote of no confidence” from the citizens of Poznan. The council proceedings were immediately suspended, and local police took two individuals into custody.

Zawisza Denies Responsibility

MP Marcelina Zawisza rejected the mayor’s accusations, stating that Jaśkowiak is fabricating facts and rewriting history. She noted that the individuals who attacked the mayor were not present during her previous parliamentary oversight visit to the city hall.

Zawisza clarified that her earlier intervention at the magistrate involved residents of the Osiedla Maltanskie district, who were protesting the sale of their land to developers after two years of failed attempts to meet with the mayor.

The MP argued that the mayor has a legal duty to cooperate with parliamentary oversight and provide requested documentation, which she has now referred to the Central Anti-Corruption Bureau (CBA). She emphasized that the mayor’s arrogance toward residents is the only link between these events.

Jaśkowiak Claims Abuse of Oversight

Mayor Jacek Jaśkowiak countered that Marcelina Zawisza abused her parliamentary oversight rights by entering his office with the same individuals who later attacked him. He questioned whether these people were sympathizers or militants of the Razem party.

The mayor expressed frustration that the parliamentary ethics committee has not responded to what he described as an unauthorized entry into his office during the handling of classified information. He asserted that the MP bears shared responsibility for creating an atmosphere that led to the assault.

A Targeted Attack by a Combat Athlete

Describing the event as a consequence of lowered standards in public debate, Jaśkowiak revealed that he had anticipated such an incident due to the lack of security at City Council sessions and the rising level of public aggression.

The mayor identified his attacker as a practitioner of Muay Thai, allegedly a Polish champion. Citing video evidence provided by a councilor, Jaśkowiak characterized the assailant as a highly skilled and dangerous individual.
