Reuters: The Framework of the US-Iran Agreement Revealed

According to a draft memorandum reported by Reuters, the United States and Iran are negotiating a deal involving the lifting of sanctions and the freezing of Tehran’s nuclear program.

The Terms of the Agreement

Under the framework memorandum, Iran is expected to immediately open the Strait of Hormuz to all merchant vessels, while the United States will end the blockade of Iranian ports. Reuters reports that the US intends to lift sanctions on Iranian oil for a set period and unlock billions of dollars in frozen funds through cash transfers, credit lines, and regional cooperation.

In exchange, Iran would commit to refraining from pursuing nuclear weapons and maintain the status quo by halting uranium enrichment and facility expansion. The US has agreed to oversee the dilution of Iran’s existing enriched uranium stockpiles, with the mechanism for this process to be finalized within 60 days.

Developing a Long-term Plan

The United States, alongside regional partners, plans to establish a reconstruction and development program for Iran, with terms to be negotiated within 60 days. This timeframe also applies to finalizing the specifics of the nuclear program and the handling of enriched material.

Following a final agreement, existing US and UN sanctions on Iran are slated to be lifted according to an established schedule.

Four Pillars of the US-Iran Deal

A US administration official stated on Friday that the agreement rests on four pillars: the opening of the Strait of Hormuz, the dismantling of Iran’s nuclear program—including the destruction and removal of enriched materials—long-term regional peace, and a verification inspection regime. Iran would gain gradual sanctions relief and reintegration into the global economy.

President Donald Trump and a Pakistani mediator announced on Saturday that a deal to end the conflict in the Middle East is expected to be signed on Sunday, though Iran has yet to confirm this date.
