Russia Launches Massive Attack on Kyiv; Poland Scrambles Fighter Jets

Russian forces launched a massive missile and drone assault on Kyiv early Thursday, killing at least 10 people and injuring 56, while Poland mobilized its air force as a security precaution.

Devastating Strike on the Capital

Russian forces conducted a large-scale attack on Kyiv during the night from Wednesday to Thursday, striking residential areas. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported at least 10 deaths and 56 injuries, including two children, noting that the casualty count may rise.

The strike caused a multi-story building to partially collapse, trapping residents on upper floors. A fire also erupted on the roof of a hotel located on Shevchenko Boulevard in the city center. Klitschko confirmed that 28 targets were hit across all districts of the city, using a combination of drones, ballistic, and cruise missiles.

Zelenskyy Returns to Ukraine

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who was on a visit to Ireland, announced his immediate return to the country. He had previously warned that Russian troops were preparing for another major assault.

Polish Airspace Security Measures

The Operational Command of the Polish Armed Forces (DORSZ) scrambled fighter jets during the night in response to the Russian strikes. The command emphasized that no violation of Polish airspace was recorded.

Preventive measures included the activation of ground-based air defense and radar reconnaissance systems, particularly in areas adjacent to the conflict zone. By early morning, the military confirmed the mission had concluded and forces had returned to standard operations.

International Support

DORSZ expressed gratitude to NATO allies, specifically the NATO Aircom command and the French military, for their support during the mission. The command also thanked the Dutch Armed Forces for providing air defense systems and reiterated that it continues to monitor the situation in Ukraine to ensure the security of Polish airspace.
