Russian Dissident Murdered in Biała Podlaska; Victim Had Refused State Protection

A 44-year-old Russian artist who openly criticized the Kremlin was fatally shot in Biała Podlaska on June 15, prompting a high-stakes investigation by Polish authorities into potential foreign political involvement.

The Victim and Security Warning

On Monday, June 15, a 44-year-old Russian national known by the alias Simon Skrepecki was killed in a shooting in Biała Podlaska. The victim, who was an artist known for his criticism of Russian authorities, sustained fatal gunshot wounds to his head and torso.

Government spokesperson Adam Szłapka confirmed that security services had previously been in contact with the deceased. Szłapka stated that the man had been offered official protection but declined, claiming he did not feel threatened. The government is treating the case with extreme gravity due to implications for Polish national security.

Official Investigation and Security Concerns

Bartosz Grodecki, head of the National Security Bureau (BBN), emphasized the seriousness of the incident. He stated that if the crime is confirmed to have a political motive, it would represent a significant escalation of Russian operations conducted outside its borders.

Lublin regional prosecutors have already interviewed witnesses and secured surveillance footage from the area. A special investigative task force has been established to locate the primary perpetrator, who remains at large.

Detentions Near the Belarusian Consulate

Authorities have detained two Belarusian citizens, aged between 33 and 37, near the Consulate of the Republic of Belarus in Biała Podlaska. Investigators are currently verifying their potential involvement in the shooting.

As of now, no formal charges have been filed against the detained men. The prosecutor’s office has not ruled out the possibility of further arrests as the investigation continues.
