The incident occurred on Thursday, July 23, in the Odintsovo district of the Moscow region, between the Shichovo housing estate and the village of Lucyno near Zvenigorod, roughly 65 kilometers west of central Moscow. Local media and Telegram channels linked to Russian services, including 112 and Mash, were the first to report on the event.

Witnesses reported that the pilot attempted to steer the aircraft away from residential buildings until the last moment before ejecting. Shortly afterward, an explosion occurred, and footage of the burning wreckage in a field surfaced online.

Russian Ministry of Defense Reaction

The Russian Ministry of Defense confirmed that a combat training aircraft crashed during takeoff and that the pilot successfully ejected. No casualties or damage on the ground were reported.

According to a source from the Kommersant daily, the Russian Investigative Committee initiated proceedings regarding the violation of flight rules. A technical malfunction is preliminarily indicated as the cause.

Speculation Over the Aircraft Type

Russian authorities have not officially confirmed the type of machine, but unofficial reports—including from the Astra and Ostorozhno Novosti channels—indicate that the downed aircraft was a Su-57, Russia’s only fifth-generation fighter currently in military service.

The Ukrainian channel Exilenova+ published two statements on Telegram: first regarding the pilot’s ejection, and subsequently a “correction” claiming the alleged Su-57 was shot down by Moscow air defense. However, no other source—Ukrainian or Russian—has confirmed this version so far.

History of Su-57 Losses

This is another instance of Russia losing a Su-57. The first serial unit crashed in December 2019 near Komsomolsk-on-Amur during a test flight, also due to a technical malfunction at the time.

In June 2024, Ukrainian defense forces hit a Su-57 on the ground for the first time during a drone attack on the Akhtubinsk airfield in the Astrakhan region.
