Russian Missile Enters Polish Airspace Amid Massive Strikes on Ukraine, Prompting Diplomatic and Military Alert

An unidentified object violating Polish airspace on Thursday morning led to scrambled F-16 jets, high-level security meetings, and sharp warnings from the Polish and Ukrainian foreign ministries regarding unacceptable security threats.

Unidentified Object Detected in Polish Airspace

On Thursday, July 30, in the early morning hours, an unidentified object was detected in Polish airspace, according to a statement issued in the morning by the Operational Command of the Armed Forces.

At 3:40 AM, the object was detected moving westward, prompting the dispatch of a duty F-16 fighter jet for identification and interception. At 3:46 AM, before definitive identification could be made, the object vanished from radar systems. An Mi-24 helicopter was subsequently sent to verify the technical radar readings near the last known location, leading the crew to locate a probable crash site in an uninhabited area near Tarnawa-Kolonia in the Lublin Voivodeship. A Ground Search and Rescue Team and relevant services were deployed to the scene, where operational and security measures are ongoing.

Military Officials Detail Interception Readiness

Operational Commander of the Armed Forces, Maj. Gen. Pilot Dr. Ireneusz Nowak, informed a coordination team meeting that two missiles were detected that directly threatened Poland. He stated that he was ready to give the order to shoot them down as fighters were positioned exactly in the area where a missile struck the ground, and they were prepared to engage if the flight continued.

Minister of National Defense Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz stated that during the night from Wednesday to Thursday, Gen. Nowak placed all national air defense systems on the highest state of alert, noting that over 20 objects were found close to Polish airspace due to a massive Russian attack on western Ukraine.

Polish Leadership Visits the Scene

In connection with the violation of Polish airspace, Prime Minister Donald Tusk, along with Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defense Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz and other officials, traveled to Lublin on Thursday. They participated in a coordination team meeting involving representatives from the military, fire service, police, and the Lublin Voivode.

Ministry of Foreign Affairs Responds to the Incident

The MFA spokesperson addressed the situation on Thursday afternoon, stating that another night of Russian terror had now touched Poland as well. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Radosław Sikorski spoke with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha regarding the developments in the Lublin Voivodeship.

The spokesperson emphasized that the event was a direct consequence of brutal attacks by the Russian Federation on Ukraine, creating an unacceptable danger for citizens. The Polish MFA remains in contact with armed forces and relevant institutions, analyzing the course of the event with NATO allies, and stated that further diplomatic steps will be taken after technical services establish the details.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Comments on the Brutal Reality

Earlier, Acting Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha addressed the incident on X, noting his conversation with Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski following the airspace violation by a Russian missile. Sybiha expressed appreciation for the Polish government’s reaction, assured full solidarity, and offered assistance in clarifying the circumstances.

Sybiha proposed resuming talks with allies on protecting Ukrainian airspace with partner participation and stated that today’s violation is a stark reminder of the brutal reality facing both countries. He also reported on President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s recent meetings with Prime Minister Donald Tusk in Lublin, as well as visits to the UK and the US, expressing gratitude for Poland’s leadership and determination.
