Satellite Imagery Confirms Irreparable Damage to Russian Tu-95 Bomber

Ukraine’s Security Service confirmed a successful drone strike on the Engels airbase in the Saratov region, resulting in the total destruction of the tail section of a strategic Tu-95 bomber.

The Successful Strike

The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) announced a successful special operation targeting a strategic Tu-95 bomber at the Engels military airfield in Russia’s Saratov region. Drones reportedly traveled approximately 800 kilometers to reach their target.

According to initial assessments, the aircraft sustained severe damage, with its tail section completely detached. This specific component was utilized for mass missile strikes against Ukraine.

Strategic Impact of the Operation

The Tu-95, designed to strike strategic targets in all weather conditions, can carry up to six cruise missiles on an internal rotary launcher. It has been frequently used by Russian forces to launch Kh-101 cruise missiles.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky commended the soldiers for their accuracy, describing the destruction of the bomber as a successful long-range sanction imposed on Russia for the ongoing war.

Confirmation via Satellite Imagery

Radio Liberty investigators released a satellite image from Planet Labs on Sunday confirming the successful strike. The photo clearly shows the aircraft’s tail completely separated from the main fuselage.

Defense analyst Dawid Kamizela stated that the loss of the tail section renders the aircraft an irreparable loss. He noted that the remaining parts can only be recycled for other Tu-95s, noting that the loss is particularly severe as the production of the Tu-95 ended over 30 years ago.
