Disappearance in the Narew River
The incident was reported to emergency services at approximately 3:00 PM on Sunday, August 2, in Pułtusk. Two men entered the water near the sewage treatment plant, past the Wyszków bridge, staying several meters from the shore. One of them lost his footing, and the strong river current swept away the 45-year-old man, who quickly disappeared beneath the water surface.
Multi-Agency Rescue and Search Operations
Police officers, State and Volunteer Firefighters, and Pułtusk Volunteer Water Rescue Service (WOPR) lifeguards were dispatched to the scene, including firefighters from Pułtusk and volunteer fire departments from Grabówiec and Głodowo. The search was conducted from both the water and the shoreline utilizing specialized police and fire rescue boats. State Fire Department divers from Maków Mazowiecki examined the riverbed in the area where the man was last seen.
Continuation of Search Efforts on Monday
Search operations carried out on Sunday continued until late evening hours, though the 45-year-old was not found despite intensive efforts. On Monday, August 3, police officers, firefighters, and WOPR rescuers resumed the operation from the early morning hours.
Police Warnings Regarding River Dangers
Pułtusk police remind the public that the Narew River poses serious hazards even in areas that appear calm from the shore. A strong current, sudden drops in the riverbed, and limited underwater visibility can cause individuals to lose their footing and prevent a safe return to land. Authorities urge citizens to use only designated and guarded swimming areas, avoid unguarded river locations, refrain from swimming after consuming alcohol, avoid overestimating personal swimming abilities, and respond when someone may need assistance.
