The Attack and Detention
The incident occurred on Thursday afternoon at the Provincial Specialist Hospital in Jastrzębie-Zdrój. A 19-year-old man entered the gastroenterology ward on the second floor, wandering through the facility before pulling a 15-centimeter knife to attack bystanders.
One of the injured doctors managed to overpower the assailant, holding him until authorities arrived. Investigators confirmed the suspect, a Jastrzębie-Zdrój resident with no prior criminal record, was not under the influence of alcohol but preliminary tests indicate he was under the influence of drugs.
Legal Proceedings and Charges
The suspect has been charged with the attempted murder of four people, an offense carrying a sentence ranging from eight years to life imprisonment. During his questioning, he refused to provide a statement and denied the charges.
Prosecutor Jacek Rzeszowski stated that the victims were random individuals, and there is no evidence the suspect had any prior connection to them or the medical staff. Investigators are currently reviewing hospital surveillance footage and continuing to interview witnesses.
Victim Conditions
Three of the victims—a doctor and two patients—sustained chest stab wounds. One patient also suffered neck injuries and underwent surgery; all three are in stable condition. A nurse who sustained a hand injury has been discharged home.
Political Response and Ministry Stance
Marcin Kierwiński, head of the Ministry of the Interior and Administration, urged an end to hostility against medical workers. His statement followed public debates regarding hospital administration issues, though officials noted there is currently no evidence linking the suspect to these specific political controversies.
The Ministry of Health released a statement confirming that the priority remains the recovery of the victims. The ministry and the Silesian branch of the National Health Fund are maintaining constant contact with hospital management and emergency services.
