Structural Failure at Manhattan High-Rise Prompts Emergency Response

Authorities are stabilizing a 37-story Manhattan tower on East 42nd Street after construction work triggered structural damage, including buckled support columns and floor collapses, leading to local evacuations.

Construction Site Structural Crisis

The incident occurred at a 37-story building on East 42nd Street, currently being converted from office space to residential use. On Tuesday morning, firefighters received reports of bricks falling from upper floors due to a structural problem on the 21st level. No injuries were reported.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani confirmed that two structural columns buckled and multiple floors suffered cracks and cave-ins. While engineers work to reinforce the affected area, the building remains unstable.

Emergency Stabilization Efforts

Department of Buildings Commissioner Ahmed Tigani reported that emergency shoring is being installed throughout the 21st floor to support weakened columns. Experts noted that due to the steel frame, the risk is limited to local, rather than total, collapse.

Streets surrounding the site were closed to pedestrian and vehicular traffic on Tuesday, and nearby buildings were evacuated. By Tuesday evening, officials reported that the situation had stabilized, with no further movement detected, allowing some evacuations to be lifted.

Investigation Into Failure

Developer MetroLoft suggested the damage may have resulted from increased loading during the expansion of upper floors. Founder Nathan Berman stated that while 95 percent of the structure is intact, the firm is investigating why two specific columns failed to support the load.
