While diabetics may qualify for state support benefits in Poland, eligibility is determined by the individual’s level of functional autonomy rather than the medical diagnosis itself, necessitating a strict assessment process.

The Reality of Diabetes in Poland

Diabetes has reached epidemic proportions in Poland, as indicated by alarming health ministry statistics. The disease, often described as a “silent killer,” can remain asymptomatic for years while systematically damaging vital organs, blood vessels, and nerves.

Beyond the physical toll, the condition imposes significant financial burdens on households. Patients must maintain rigid discipline through constant blood glucose monitoring, specialized dietary habits, and the procurement of expensive medical equipment and medications.

Financial Support Beyond Income Criteria

A key aspect of the support benefit is that it is not subject to income thresholds. Eligible individuals can receive these payments regardless of their earnings, and receiving this benefit does not forfeit rights to social pensions or standard retirement benefits.

However, the prerequisite for any payment is an evaluation by the Regional Disability Assessment Board (WZON). The system operates on a scale of 0 to 100 points, with a minimum of 70 points required for ZUS to approve any disbursement.

Defining Eligibility Through Functional Need

A medical diagnosis alone does not guarantee financial support. Eligibility is reserved for patients suffering from advanced complications who require consistent assistance from another person to manage basic daily living activities.

During the assessment, officials analyze the impact of long-term disease progression and the resulting necessity for external support to satisfy fundamental life requirements.

Payment Tiers and Statutory Adjustments

Benefit amounts are linked to the social pension, which is subject to annual indexation. As of March 1, 2026, the base social pension rose to 1,978.49 PLN gross, with support benefits ranging from 40% to 220% of this amount based on the WZON point score.

Under the 2026 scale, those scoring 95–100 points receive 4,352.70 PLN monthly, while those scoring 70–74 points receive 791.40 PLN. Intermediate scores of 90–94, 85–89, 80–84, and 75–79 points correspond to 3,561.30 PLN, 2,374.20 PLN, 1,582.80 PLN, and 1,187.10 PLN respectively.

Procedural Requirements for Applicants

The application process involves two distinct steps. First, one must obtain a disability certification and undergo a WZON assessment to receive an official point score. Only after receiving a decision of at least 70 points can one apply to ZUS for the benefit.

Crucially, submitting an application to ZUS before receiving the formal WZON decision will result in an automatic rejection. ZUS lacks the legal basis to process claims until the official score is registered in the state system.
