The 30-Day Protection Window
Losing a job, closing a business, or taking unpaid leave starts a countdown. 30 days after health insurance expires, many individuals lose their right to benefits funded by the National Health Fund (NFZ). For patients undergoing diagnosis or awaiting procedures, this could result in thousands of zlotys in personal costs.
Ending employment does not immediately stop medical coverage. Regulations provide a 30-day protection period starting from the moment the title to health insurance expires.
Eligibility and Insurance Status
After one month, the right to NFZ-funded services expires. Without a new insurance title, patients may be billed for treatment. For serious medical procedures, these bills can reach several thousand or even tens of thousands of zlotys.
Primary coverage applies to employees, retirees, entrepreneurs, and their family members. Many people do not realize that failing to formally register a family member can lead to significant issues when accessing public healthcare.
Verifying Coverage via eWUÅš
At a clinic, patients only need their PESEL number and an ID document. The facility uses the eWUÅš system, which updates data daily from ZUS and KRUS. If the system shows no insurance, patients can present supporting documents or submit an affidavit. A red warning in eWUÅš does not always mean treatment must be paid for, as it sometimes reflects data transmission delays.
Retroactive Coverage and Exceptions
The law provides for exceptions and groups with extended protection. Some individuals can avoid costs if they had the right to insurance but failed to complete the necessary paperwork. Retroactive registration is possible in specific scenarios, such as when an insured person forgets to add a child or spouse to their coverage.
Voluntary Insurance Options
Those not subject to mandatory coverage can sign a voluntary insurance agreement to ensure continuity of care. Between April and June 2026, the cost is 835.04 PLN per month, calculated as 9 percent of the assessment base, which changes quarterly. Significant gaps in insurance can trigger an additional fee exceeding 18,000 PLN in extreme cases.
