The Body Trade at Szpital Południowy: Shocking Revelations in Warsaw

Reports have emerged of a corrupt, exploitative scheme at Warsaw’s Szpital Południowy, where a morgue coordinator allegedly profited from the illegal sale of bodies and funeral services, mimicking the infamous “skin hunters” scandal.

The Morgue Empire and Total Control

Szpital Południowy, once touted as a medical showpiece, allegedly operated an internal corruption ring directed by morgue coordinator Artur Habowski. With the support of former management, Habowski held absolute authority over deceased patients’ remains.

Habowski centralized death certificates in his office, forcing grieving families to interact with him directly. This forced proximity allowed him to apply psychological pressure and manipulate emotions to serve his personal interests.

A Black Market for Funerals

According to Onet, the facility became a hub for the illegal sale of bodies and unauthorized funeral services. The coordinator established an unofficial fee schedule for standard procedures, pocketing payments directly without invoices or official documentation.

The scale of the illicit profit was significant. In just two months last year, over 80 bodies passed through the morgue; for dressing services alone, the coordinator likely generated over 40,000 PLN in untaxed income.

Harassment and Desecration

A systematic exclusion of non-compliant funeral homes left families facing artificial delays and obstructions if they chose external service providers. Reports indicate these external firms were frequently turned away or faced direct sabotage.

The situation escalated into the alleged desecration of bodies. There were instances where remains destined for independent funeral homes were treated with contempt, including acts of urination, accompanied by verbal abuse directed at competing business owners.

Prosecutorial Investigation and Management Shake-up

Prosecutors are currently investigating the matter, focusing on document forgery rather than extortion. In an apparent attempt to preempt accusations, Habowski himself filed a report claiming his official seal had been stolen.

The fallout has already forced a change in leadership, with Warsaw’s mayor calling for the removal of the hospital’s previous administration. The new management has remained tight-lipped, offering only brief statements regarding the severity of the investigation.
