The Myth of the “Alcohol Pension” in 2026
The so-called alcohol pension in 2026 stirs immense emotions, yet numerous false beliefs have grown around this benefit. Many people still believe that the Social Insurance Institution pays out money simply for alcohol addiction. However, the legal reality in Poland imposes very strict conditions on both officials and patients.
There is no official term such as “alcohol pension” in the Polish legal system. It is merely a colloquial name that wrongly suggests the state financially rewards alcohol addiction. In reality, we are talking about a standard incapacity pension. ZUS does not grant a single zloty for the mere fact of being addicted. The basis for applying for funds is the complete or partial destruction of the body as a direct result of many years of addiction.
Who Will ZUS Grant Money to Under the Alcohol Pension?
The benefit will go exclusively to individuals whose alcohol use has led to irreversible health changes preventing them from working. ZUS medical examiners base their decisions on solid medical documentation. The most common reason for granting the benefit is advanced liver cirrhosis, chronic pancreatitis, or severe neurological disorders. Applicants are frequently diagnosed with Korsakoff’s syndrome or alcohol-induced dementia, which completely exclude them from the labor market. However, a severe illness alone is still not enough to receive a transfer. The applicant must prove an adequate insurance history, namely the so-called contribution and non-contribution periods. The required number of years depends directly on the age at which the patient’s incapacity for work arose. Furthermore, the condition must develop during specified employment periods or a maximum of 18 months after their termination. Individuals who have already reached the general retirement age will not receive the pension because they are already entitled to a retirement pension.
How Much is the Alcohol Pension in 2026?
The amount of the benefit depends directly on the degree of health loss indicated in the ZUS doctor’s verdict. Starting March 1, 2026, following a 5.3 percent indexation, the minimum rates guaranteed by the state have noticeably increased. With total incapacity for work, the minimum pension is currently 1,978.49 PLN gross, which amounts to about 1,783.16 PLN net. Individuals diagnosed with partial incapacity for work receive 75 percent of this amount, which is 1,483.87 PLN gross (about 1,337.37 PLN net in hand). However, the final payout amount can be significantly higher. ZUS calculates it individually based on previous earnings and the number of years the applicant legally worked and paid contributions.
How to Apply for the Alcohol Pension Step by Step?
The bureaucratic procedure is identical to that for a pension due to heart or spine diseases. The key to success is meticulously gathering treatment history. One must prepare hospital discharge summaries, documentation from addiction treatment centers, and diagnostic test results. The most important document is the certificate of health status on the OL-9 form, which the attending physician must issue no earlier than a month before submitting the application. A complete set of papers along with the ERN form and documents confirming years of work must be delivered to ZUS. This can be done in person at a branch, sent via traditional mail, or submitted online through the eZUS system. The final and most stressful stage is appearing in person before a medical commission. It is there that the ZUS medical examiner ultimately assesses whether the body’s condition truly prevents taking up any gainful employment.
Why Does the State Pay These Funds?
The main purpose of this benefit is to provide basic means of subsistence to individuals who have become permanently incapable of work. It is worth emphasizing that ZUS guards these funds very meticulously and extremely rarely grants the pension permanently. As a rule, the benefit is temporary in nature and involves regular controls. If the sick person undergoes successful therapy, maintains long-term abstinence, and the condition of their internal organs improves, officials will immediately withdraw the pension payout.
