Three Abandoned Building Fires in Three Days: 22-Year-Old Remanded in Custody

Police in Warsaw’s Wilanów district have arrested a 22-year-old man suspected of repeatedly setting fire to an abandoned building on Augustówka Street, endangering the lives of its occupants.

Arrest Following Three Fires

Police officers from the Warsaw Wilanów Police Station have detained a 22-year-old man suspected of setting fire to rooms in an abandoned building on Augustówka Street three separate times. According to investigators, his actions put the people inside the building in direct danger of losing their lives or suffering serious bodily harm. By court decision, the man has been temporarily arrested for three months.

Initial Blaze and Hospitalization

The first fire occurred a few days ago at around 8:30 PM, drawing police and the State Fire Service to the scene. Several people living in the abandoned building were inside at the time, and firefighters evacuated one person who was taken to the hospital with suspected carbon monoxide poisoning. Investigators were unable to determine the cause of the fire during the initial procedures.

Second Fire and Ongoing Patrols

The very following day, another fire broke out in the same abandoned building while police were conducting heightened patrols, checking IDs, and securing the area to find the perpetrator. At night, officers noticed smoke and flames once again, immediately evacuating the occupants and calling the fire department before the fire could engulf part of the building’s roof.

Identification and Detention

During their ongoing operations, police obtained information indicating that one of the building’s residents might be linked to the series of arsons. The gathered material and findings at the scene led directly to the detention of the 22-year-old man.

Charges and Court Decision

The suspect was taken to the Warsaw Wilanów Police Station for further procedural actions, where investigators charged him with setting fire to rooms in the abandoned building three times in rapid succession, thereby endangering the occupants. At the request of the Warsaw Mokotów District Prosecutor’s Office, the District Court for Warsaw Mokotów applied a three-month temporary arrest measure against the 22-year-old, who now faces up to 3 years in prison.
