“I had a very good conversation with the new Prime Minister of the UK, Andy Burnham. We discussed many topics, including the excellent relations we have with the United Kingdom,” the U.S. President stated in a post-Monday statement.
Trump added that while the Prime Minister faces a difficult task, he is capable of succeeding, and the United States stands ready to assist. The leaders discussed North Sea oil extraction, trade, military alliances, and the demining of the Strait of Hormuz, with plans for an in-person meeting in the near future.
Past Rhetoric and Policy Alignment
Previously, Trump admitted he knew little about Burnham, referring to him as an “extremely liberal” former mayor. However, he later praised Burnham’s approach to North Sea oil, suggesting that unlocking these resources could help transform the UK into one of the world’s wealthiest nations.
Trump also criticized the current reliance on Norwegian oil imports and expressed support for potential policies regarding wind energy infrastructure in Aberdeen. The New York Times reported that the two leaders may first meet in person at the UN General Assembly in September.
Burnham’s Domestic Reform Agenda
Andy Burnham officially replaced Keir Starmer as Prime Minister on Monday, promising the most significant political and economic reforms in forty years. He aims to break from the centralized policies of the 1980s by focusing on re-industrialization and transferring power to the UK’s regions.
The new Prime Minister plans to release a ten-year reform roadmap later this year, with initial measures to combat the cost-of-living crisis set to be unveiled on Tuesday. Despite the change in leadership, British officials anticipate that the fundamental U.S.-UK national security and trade alliance will remain stable.
