Tuberculosis Outbreak at Warsaw Kindergarten Triggers Sanepid Investigation and Child Screenings

Active tuberculosis has been detected in a kindergarten staff member in Warsaw’s Białołęka district, prompting health authorities to place 24 children on a screening list and initiate facility-wide disinfection.

Infectious tuberculosis was detected in a female kindergarten employee in Białołęka, as established by the Wirtualna Polska portal ABC Zdrowie. Individuals who had contact with the infected person are being directed for examinations. Sanepid forwarded a list of 24 children to the Masovian Center for the Treatment of Lung Diseases and Tuberculosis. Doctors have examined and discharged 12 of them. Five will be admitted next week, and three have not yet reported for admission to the ward. Journalists do not exclude the possibility that the children may have been directed to pulmonology clinics or other centers.

Currently, four children are being treated. Tuberculosis without bacilli shedding was confirmed in one child. Three further children were found to have latent tuberculosis infection. This means they do not have the active form of the disease. Individuals with latent infection and non-infectious tuberculosis manifest no symptoms and, above all, do not pose an epidemiological threat, emphasized the spokeswoman for the Provincial Sanitary-Epidemiological Station in Warsaw, Katarzyna Dziurna, in an interview with ABC Zdrowie.

The management of the facility, upon receiving information about the infection, immediately notified the State Sanitary Inspection. Consequently, employees have begun ozonation. Starting next week, the fire department will assist with this. It is a very large undertaking, said the press spokeswoman for the Białołęka District, Katarzyna Wiejowska, in an interview with the TVP3 Warszawa portal. Operations will be conducted until the end of the holidays.

The risk of contracting the disease is reduced by vaccination, which is free and mandatory up to 15 years of age. Optimally, it should be administered on the first day of the child’s life or before discharge from the neonatal ward, wrote Sanepid.
