Tusk and Kosiniak-Kamysz posted special messages as all of Poland united with Warsaw and its heroes on the 82nd anniversary of the outbreak of the Warsaw Uprising. Prime Minister Donald Tusk stated in a special video that we must not forget the lesson taught by the insurgents, while Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defense Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz emphasized that the insurgents are a symbol of boundless devotion to the homeland.

Commemorative events are underway in Warsaw, with politicians, city authorities, scouts, and capital residents paying homage to the heroes. Prime Minister Tusk expressed his gratitude and admiration for the actions of the insurgents in a video posted on the X platform.

Silence That Speaks Louder Than Words

The head of government pointed out that Warsaw is the only city in the world that stops for a minute once a year, filling the air with the sound of sirens and a poignant, eloquent silence that speaks louder than any words. He noted that this silence constantly raises the question of whether it was worth it—given the massive death toll and the destruction of the city—yet those who rose did not calculate, responding with heroism and combat against German occupation, roundups, executions, contempt, and naked violence.

Tusk emphasized that the true obligation left by the insurgents is to care for Poland’s strength during difficult times, particularly when brutal war is ongoing near the border, enemies threaten, values are attacked, and divisions are deliberately sown. He stressed that only together are we the force that will overcome all evil, noting that the insurgents went into battle singing the national anthem and that the strongest Poland in history now serves as a model for all of Europe.

Defense Minister Honors Insurgents’ Ethos of Service

Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz also used the X platform to stress that the insurgents who fought for Poland’s freedom and independence remain a symbol of courage, honor, and boundless devotion. He added that their ethos of service, responsibility, and readiness to make the ultimate sacrifice serves as a model for future generations of Poles.

Historical Scale of the 1944 Uprising

On August 1, 1944, approximately 40,000 to 50,000 insurgents took up arms in Warsaw. Planned for just a few days, the uprising lasted over two months, resulting in the deaths of approximately 18,000 insurgents and 25,000 wounded, alongside about 3,500 soldiers from the Kościuszko Division who crossed the Vistula River in September 1944 to aid the struggling city. Civilian casualties reached approximately 180,000 dead, while the remaining 500,000 surviving residents were expelled from the devastated city, which the Germans almost entirely demolished after the uprising.
