In a post on the X platform, Prime Minister Donald Tusk addressed the growing diplomatic friction between Warsaw and Kyiv. He asserted that any conflict between Poland and Ukraine serves the interests of Putin and shocks international allies, emphasizing that the primary task for both presidents should be to de-escalate tensions rather than stoke them.
Context of the presidential decision
The Prime Minister’s statement followed President Karol Nawrocki’s announcement that he intends to strip President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of Poland’s highest state honor. This move was prompted by the Ukrainian leader’s decision to name a military unit after heroes of the UPA.
Nawrocki maintained that the decision does not target the Ukrainian nation nor signal a shift in Poland’s security strategy. However, he argued that the glorification of the UPA undermines the memory of victims and damages the trust established between the two capitals.
Past reactions to Zelenskyy’s decision
Tusk had previously characterized Zelenskyy’s decision as a mistake that unnecessarily triggered emotional reactions. Following direct discussions with the Ukrainian president, Tusk noted that Zelenskyy did not intend to offend Poles or damage bilateral relations.
