Twist in A1 Motorway Drunk Driving Case: Prosecutor’s Office Makes New Move

Following intervention by the Prosecutor General, police arrested a 37-year-old suspect who caused a collision on the A1 motorway while heavily intoxicated and under active driving bans.

Prosecutor General Intervention Yields Results

The intervention of Prosecutor General and Minister of Justice Waldemar Żurek has already brought results. Police detained the suspect who caused a collision under the influence of alcohol on the A1 motorway near Woźniki. The case is currently handled by the Częstochowa District Prosecutor’s Office.

The Częstochowa District Prosecutor’s Office is investigating the case, which was taken over from the Lubliniec District Prosecutor’s Office, concerning the creation of immediate danger of a disaster in land traffic on July 18, 2026, on the A1 motorway, violation of court bans on driving mechanical vehicles, and driving a vehicle while intoxicated.

New Actions by Prosecutors Regarding A1 Collision Suspect

On July 22, at the prosecutor’s order, police detained a 37-year-old man in this case to announce a decision on presenting a charge of committing a crime and to question him as a suspect. Activities involving the detainee are planned for July 23, stated the press spokesman for the Częstochowa District Prosecutor’s Office, prosecutor Tomasz Ozimek, that morning.

On July 18 on the A1 motorway near Woźniki, a citizen’s arrest occurred of a driver who caused a collision. The 37-year-old had 2.7 per cent of alcohol in his exhaled air, two active court bans on driving mechanical vehicles, and a decision by the Starost of Pabianice revoking his driving privileges. He was taken to the police station in Woźniki. The Lubliniec District Prosecutor’s Office did not request an arrest.

Personnel Changes and Investigation Transfer

Prosecutor General Waldemar Żurek reacted to the case, instructing National Prosecutor Dariusz Korneluk to intervene. As a result, a decision will be made to dismiss the deputy District Prosecutor in Lubliniec.

His duties included exercising supervision over the activities of prosecutors on duty in that prosecutor’s unit. Simultaneously, the proceedings will be transferred for further conduct by the Częstochowa District Prosecutor’s Office, explained the press spokeswoman for the Prosecutor General, prosecutor Anna Adamiak, on July 21.

Disciplinary Proceedings Initiated

In addition, the Częstochowa District Prosecutor ordered the initiation of disciplinary proceedings aimed at assessing the correctness of the decision issued by the duty prosecutor during consultations with police officers in this case.
