Two Days of Shopping Restrictions

In mid-August, customers must prepare for shopping restrictions. On Saturday, August 15, most large stores will be closed, and on Sunday, August 16, shopping will also be unavailable in supermarkets, discount stores, and shopping malls. The next trading Sunday will not fall until August 30.

The weekend of August 15 and 16 will be unusual for anyone planning major purchases. Saturday marks the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary and Polish Armed Forces Day. This is a statutory public holiday, and laws restricting trade apply not only to Sundays but also to public holidays.

A day later falls a non-trading Sunday. The 2026 calendar of trading Sundays does not schedule any trading for August 16. In practice, this means most large facilities will remain closed from the end of business on Friday, August 14, until Monday morning.

The ban will primarily affect supermarkets, hypermarkets, discount stores, large-surface stores, and most outlets operating within shopping malls. Individual chains may set their own operating hours in the days preceding the holiday, so it is worth checking closing times on Friday.

August 15, 2026: Holidays and Trading Restrictions

On Saturday, August 15, the trade ban stems from regulations concerning statutory public holidays. The Ministry of Family, Labor, and Social Policy indicates that on Sundays and holidays, retail establishments are generally prohibited from conducting sales and performing activities directly related to trade.

The restriction also applies to commissioning work to individuals employed under civil law contracts, meaning it is not limited to salaried employees. While store owners may conduct sales personally, this does not mean every exempt establishment will be open.

August 15 is simultaneously Polish Armed Forces Day—established to commemorate the victory in the Battle of Warsaw in 1920—and the religious holiday of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. In 2026, both holidays fall on a Saturday.

Heavier Store Traffic on Friday, August 14

Two days without the ability to make standard purchases may translate into a higher volume of customers in stores on Friday, August 14. Peak traffic is expected in the afternoon and evening as shoppers stock up for the entire weekend.

Customers may purchase bread, meat, dairy, beverages, vegetables, fruit, and items needed for grilling in advance. More people may also buy daily essentials, pet food, and products typically acquired on a Saturday.

However, Friday, August 14, is not a statutory day off for all employees. The Prime Minister designated this day off for members of the civil service corps in exchange for the holiday falling on Saturday, August 15, though this does not automatically cover all workers in the economy.

What Will Remain Open on August 15 and 16?

The trade ban does not mean a total closure of all points of sale, as the law provides a catalog of exceptions. On both days, selected gas stations, pharmacies, pharmaceutical outlets, stores at railway stations, and locations at airports may operate.

Stores whose predominant activity consists of selling press, public transport tickets, tobacco products, lottery tickets, or mutual bets may also stay open. Regulations additionally cover post offices, hotel shops, medical facilities, veterinary clinics, and locations related to culture, sports, tourism, and recreation.

Establishments operated personally by their owners are also permitted to open. The owner can stand behind the counter to make sales and, under specific conditions, receive unpaid help from close relatives, provided they do not replace their own labor with staff hired under employment or civil law contracts.

Meeting the conditions of a statutory exception does not obligate a store to open. The owner or operator decides whether a facility will operate on August 15 or 16, which applies equally to gas stations, pharmacies, and small shops, so checking hours beforehand is recommended.

When Is the Next Trading Sunday?

Only one trading Sunday is scheduled for August 2026, falling on August 30 as the final Sunday of the month and the end of the holiday period. Stores will operate under rules similar to a regular trading day.

Following the August 15–16 weekend, customers will have to wait two weeks for the next Sunday when shopping is permitted across most major chains and shopping malls.
