Ukrainian Anthem Played Alongside Polish at Szczecin School Graduation

Parents and local politicians have criticized the administration of Primary School No. 54 in Szczecin for performing the Ukrainian national anthem during a 2025/2026 graduation ceremony alongside the Polish anthem.

Unilateral decision sparks local controversy

During the official farewell for eighth-grade students, the Ukrainian anthem was played alongside the Polish “Mazurek Dąbrowskiego.” The school administration justified the move in an official letter as a matter of “integration” and the “social structure” of the graduate population.

The incident surfaced following reports from concerned parents. Andrzej Knitter, a representative from the Nowa Nadzieja party, sent an official inquiry to the school after receiving complaints, triggering significant public debate.

Administration cites educational autonomy

In its official response, the school confirmed that both anthems were performed. Management argued the decision was legally permissible under the principal’s authority to organize school ceremonies, framing the choice as part of “educational and integration tasks.”

Parental council bypassed in decision-making

A primary point of contention is that the school administration made the change without consulting the Parent Council. The principal relied solely on their autonomous authority regarding school operations, a fact that has intensified the backlash.

Formal inquiries launched with education authorities

Rafał Kubowicz, head of the Szczecin branch of Nowa Nadzieja, has labeled the event a “double scandal,” citing procedural breaches. Andrzej Knitter has since filed formal inquiries with the West Pomeranian Superintendent of Schools and the Szczecin City Hall.

Parents and the public are demanding clarification on whether such practices were discussed with pedagogical supervisors and whether this is intended to become a new standard in Polish educational institutions.
