Ukrainian Drones Strike Syzran Refinery and Shadow Fleet Tankers

Ukrainian forces launched a significant drone attack against the Syzran oil refinery in Russia’s Samara region, while simultaneously targeting ten tankers and four ferries belonging to the Russian shadow fleet.

Drone Strike on Syzran Refinery

The Ukrainian General Staff reported that an attack occurred on the night of July 11-12, resulting in explosions and a fire at the Syzran refinery in the Samara region. The scale of the damage and the full impact of the strike are currently being assessed.

The Syzran facility is among the largest refineries in the Samara region, with an annual processing capacity of approximately 8.5 million tons of crude oil. It produces gasoline, diesel, aviation fuel, and other products essential to the Russian military.

Attacks on the Russian Shadow Fleet

In addition to the refinery strike, the Ukrainian military confirmed the targeting of ten tankers and four ferries in the Sea of Azov. These vessels are utilized to transport Russian oil and products while bypassing international sanctions, while the ferries facilitate military logistics.

Major Robert “Madiar” Brovdi, commander of the Ukrainian Unmanned Systems Forces (SBS), stated that the unit struck 90 Russian vessels over the course of a week. The Russian shadow fleet, consisting of at least 600 to 1,600 small and medium-sized tankers, is a critical component for Russia to circumvent global export restrictions.
