Unprecedented Crowds Hit Tatra Mountain Trails as TOPR Issues Urgent Appeal

Following a sunny weekend, massive tourist crowds have flooded Tatra Mountain trails, prompting rescue services to urge caution, manage delays, and maintain safe distances from active helicopter operations.

Crowds Flood Tatra Trails

Such a siege on the trails has not been seen in a long time. Beautiful and sunny weather caused tourists to flock to the routes en masse, creating queues at the entrances to the most popular peaks including Giewont and Rysy.

After a few days of worse weather in the Tatra Mountains, the sun returned over the weekend, drawing crowds of tourists to the mountains. Queues formed from the early morning hours at trail entrances, including in Kuźnice, at the entrance to the Kościeliska Valley, and on the route leading to Morskie Oko.

Queues and Park Recommendations

According to the Tatra National Park (TPN), very heavy tourist traffic prevails on the trails. On difficult sections equipped with chains and other artificial aids, bottlenecks and queues form, which prolongs crossing times, specifically affecting the summit dome of Giewont, Świnica, Rysy, and the Orla Perć region.

The park appeals to factor in possible delays when planning trips and to exercise caution. Queues also form at ticket offices by the trail entrances, prompting TPN to encourage purchasing tickets online to enter the park without waiting.

TOPR Helicopter Warning

In connection with the intensified tourist traffic, rescue workers from the Tatra Volunteer Search and Rescue (TOPR) draw attention to the dangerous behavior of some tourists during rescue operations. Bystanders often approach too close to the helicopter landing site or ongoing rescue operations out of curiosity, hindering actions and posing a danger to both rescuers and tourists.

TOPR rescuers emphasized that while helicopter operations arouse justified emotions and interest, they urgently appeal to tourists not to approach a working helicopter and to secure all items that could pose a threat, such as loose clothing or sleeping mats, because even the smallest stone or object kicked up by rotor wash poses a mortal danger.

According to forecasters, the coming week in the Tatra Mountains is expected to be sunny and warm. Temperatures in the mountains are predicted to reach about 23 degrees Celsius, and up to 28 degrees Celsius in Zakopane, which may translate to a continuation of very heavy tourist traffic on the most popular trails.
