Violent Winds Sweep Through Poland, Forcing Scout Camp Evacuations

Severe storms across northern Poland have triggered dozens of emergency interventions and forced the mass evacuation of scout camps in the Pomeranian and Warmian-Masurian regions due to dangerous weather conditions.

Storm-Related Emergency Interventions

Between 8:00 AM yesterday and 6:00 AM today, firefighters conducted 51 weather-related operations. The highest activity was recorded in the Wejherowo (12) and Słupsk (11) districts.

Scout Camp Evacuations

Fifteen scout camps in the Pomeranian Voivodeship were evacuated to safe locations due to high winds. Additionally, 60 scouts and five supervisors were evacuated from a camp in Frombork, Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship.

Junior Brigadier Łukasz Wróblewski confirmed that no scouts were injured at the Frombork site. After the scouts vacated their tents, the wind destroyed them, and a tree fell onto an auxiliary building at the camp, leading to the decision to relocate the group to a primary school.

Emergency Operations in Warmia-Masuria

The Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship reported 230 interventions by Wednesday, concentrated primarily in the Braniewo (55), Olsztyn (40), and Bartoszyce (37) districts. Strong winds are currently impacting the Braniewo, Frombork, and Elbląg areas, as well as the Great Masurian Lakes, where the Volunteer Water Search and Rescue Service (MOPR) is urging vessels to remain in port.

Meteorological Warnings

The Institute of Meteorology and Water Management (IMGW) has issued wind warnings for the Masovian, Podlaskie, Lublin, West Pomeranian, Pomeranian, and Warmian-Masurian voivodeships. Forecasts predict sustained winds of 45 km/h, with gusts reaching 85 km/h and localized speeds of up to 120 km/h. Third-degree alerts remain in effect for the Puck and Nowy Dwór districts.
