Warsaw Bus Crash Caught on Video: Technical Failure Suspected

The Miejski Reporter Facebook page released footage showing the start of a city bus’s path through the Ochota district. On Sunday, July 5, a bus operating on line 186 hit road infrastructure and a tram before colliding with fourteen vehicles and entering an underpass, resulting in six injuries.

Disputed Cause of the Incident

The bus driver reported a brake failure to responding police officers. However, unofficial findings from TVN Warszawa suggest that a malfunctioning “accelerator pedal transmitter” may have sent a constant signal to the engine controller, indicating the driver was continuously pressing the gas pedal.

Expert Analysis of the Wreckage

An official from Miejskie Zakłady Autobusowe, who examined the wreckage, noted that if the brakes had truly failed, the bus would have stopped after the initial collisions. The expert explained that the driver was likely pressing the brake pedal, but the engine’s high power prevented the bus from stopping, potentially leading the driver to misinterpret the situation as a brake malfunction.
