Warsaw Uprising Heroine Irena Paśnik Dies at 100

Irena Paśnik, a Warsaw Uprising liaison officer for the “Baszta” Regiment known by the codename “Irka,” has passed away at the age of 100, as confirmed by Mayor Rafał Trzaskowski.

A Legacy of Service

Irena Paśnik, born Szyperska, died between Monday and Tuesday night. Warsaw Mayor Rafał Trzaskowski paid tribute to the veteran, noting that she would have turned 101 this October and emphasizing the city’s lasting gratitude for her service.

Uprising Experience

Joining the resistance at age 19, Paśnik served until September 28, 1944. She recalled identifying fellow recruits by their military-style attire and training gait, which prompted her to enlist after units arrived from the Chojnowski Forests.

Survival Amidst Danger

Serving as a medic, Paśnik faced grave danger while delivering supplies to wounded soldiers. She recounted a harrowing encounter with five Gestapo officers, narrowly avoiding execution by maintaining a steady pace and composure after hearing the sound of weapons being prepared.

Continued Resistance

Despite the constant threat of death, Paśnik continued to support the Home Army (AK) by transporting weapons and sensitive intelligence, including operations during the shelling of the Czerniakowska area.

Honors and Decorations

Irena Paśnik’s contributions were recognized with the Home Army Cross, the Warsaw Uprising Cross, and the Veteran of the Struggle for Independence Badge. In 2014, she received a commemorative medal marking the 70th anniversary of the Warsaw Uprising from the Association of Warsaw Insurgents.
