Poland 2050 party faces internal turmoil after failed leadership election, with criticism mounting against Szymon Hołownia.
Hołownia’s Position in Doubt
Szymon Hołownia suggested he might run for chairman of Poland 2050 if elections are repeated. However, one party politician told Wirtualna Polska that “no one is waiting for Szymon anymore.” The portal reported that even activists who previously supported Hołownia no longer want the former Sejm Marshal to lead the party.
Politicians from Poland 2050 point out that coalition voters negatively evaluated Hołownia’s secret meetings with PiS leaders. “People remember that, Hołownia has no future in politics,” said former Hołownia allies to WP.
Hołownia Faces Sharp Criticism
One WP source stated that “Hołownia got a scolding” from other Poland 2050 politicians. “For not remembering with whom he created this party, for not listening to MPs, for being deaf to suggestions from the activists, for getting carried away with Pełczyńska and promoting her at the expense of others. And yet it was she who urged him to pursue an international career and thus step back into the shadows,” they said.
Previous Resignation Announcement
Some Poland 2050 activists express concerns about their future political careers. “We’re in a difficult situation because of Szymon,” one WP source stated. Party politicians reacted negatively to Hołownia’s suggestion of possibly running in the leadership election. A few months ago, the former Sejm Marshal had himself said he would step down from leading the party, as Poland 2050 needed a new beginning.
National Council to Decide
On Sunday, January 11, Poland 2050 conducted an online second round of elections for party chairman. Minister of Funds and Regional Policy Katarzyna Pełczyńska-Nałęcz and Minister of Climate and Environment Paulina Hennig-Kloska participated in the elections. However, the voting was invalidated. The party later explained that “significantly more votes were cast in the voting process than the number of party members entitled to vote.”
On Friday, January 16 at 6:30 PM, the National Council of Poland 2050 will meet online. The party will decide whether to repeat the entire leadership election process or only the second round.
