The Polish military has taken delivery of its first fifth-generation F-35 fighter jets, officially designated “Husarz,” marking a major operational shift in the country’s defensive capabilities on NATO’s eastern flank.
A New Era for the Polish Air Force
Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz confirmed the “Husarz” designation for the new aircraft, describing the acquisition as a long-term process. While only three jets are currently in Poland, the fleet is expected to reach 14 by the end of the year, with an additional 12 arriving in 2027 as part of a 32-plane order.
The government has invested 2.5 billion PLN into modernizing the base in Łask to support these fifth-generation machines. Officials emphasize that this achievement is the result of years of collaborative effort by soldiers, ground personnel, and administrative specialists.
Modernization and Strategic Defense
Beyond the F-35s, the Ministry of Defense highlighted recent procurement contracts for Abrams tanks and Apache helicopters, totaling 6 billion PLN in military equipment over the last two years. These acquisitions are intended to ensure the Polish army is equipped with the most advanced technology available.
General Ireneusz Nowak, deputy commander of the General Command of the Armed Forces, was credited with overseeing the transport of the aircraft to Poland. Minister Kosiniak-Kamysz lauded the pilots and ground crews as among the best in the world for their role in this operational milestone.
Political Significance and International Cooperation
Paweł Szefernaker, representing the president, characterized the arrival as a historic day and a symbol of Poland’s modernization and national ambition. The procurement process for the jets began in previous years and was formalized under a 2020 contract.
Discussions also addressed the strengthening of the Polish-American military alliance. Officials noted that the deployment of these assets, alongside commitments for additional U.S. troops, reinforces Poland’s position as a key partner in transatlantic security and a regional leader in military logistics.
