Prosecutors in Poznań have summoned former Deputy Justice Minister Michał Woś to appear as a suspect on May 28 as part of an investigation into irregularities within the Prison Service.
Investigation into Prison Service Irregularities
RMF FM reporter Krzysztof Zasada reported that investigators aim to question Woś at the Regional Prosecutor’s Office in Poznań. A specialized team is currently examining allegations including neglect of duty, mismanagement, and abuse of power by officials within the prison system.
Michał Woś served as Secretary of State in the Ministry of Justice from 2020 to 2023, where he oversaw the Prison Service. In February, Justice Minister Waldemar Żurek submitted a request to the Speaker of the Sejm to lift Woś’s immunity in connection with this investigation.
Allegations of Procedural Violations
The National Prosecutor’s Office stated that proceedings were initiated following reports from the Director General of the Prison Service regarding irregularities in the establishment of the Internal Inspectorate, recruitment processes, and the expenditure of agency funds.
The allegations include the unauthorized employment of individuals without required qualifications and the improper early promotion of officers in violation of the 2010 Prison Service Act. Investigators claim these actions involve both public officials and the former deputy minister responsible for the institution.
Indictment Regarding the Pegasus Purchase
Woś is also facing a separate case currently before the District Court in Warsaw. Prosecutors have charged him with abuse of power and failure to fulfill duties related to the transfer of 25 million PLN from the Justice Fund to the CBA for the purchase of Pegasus spyware.
The prosecution alleges that Woś misappropriated entrusted funds and acted to the detriment of the public interest. If convicted, he faces a potential sentence of up to 10 years in prison.
