Poland to Impose Strict Penalties for Reckless Driving Maneuvers

New regulations in Poland, effective March 30, 2026, will prohibit drifting and wheelies, carrying hefty fines and license suspensions.

New Regulations Target Dangerous Driving

As of March 30, 2026, Polish drivers face stricter rules aimed at curbing dangerous road behavior. Amendments to existing laws specifically ban intentional drifting and riding a motorcycle on one wheel.

The changes stem from a November 4, 2025, amendment to laws intended to improve road safety, with some regulations already in effect since January 29th.

Drifting and Wheelies Now Illegal

The new rules explicitly prohibit intentionally causing a vehicle to skid, known as drifting. This also includes any situation where a vehicle’s wheel loses contact with the road surface, such as performing a wheelie on a motorcycle.

New Offense: Drifting – Penalties from January 29th

The amendment introduced a new offense – drifting (Article 86c of the Code of Petty Offences) – which has been in force since January 29, 2026. A fine of at least 1500 zł (minimum 3000 zł for repeat offenders) will be imposed on anyone who intentionally causes a vehicle to skid on a public road, residential zone, or traffic zone.

If the drifting endangers road safety, the fine increases to at least 2500 zł (minimum 5000 zł for repeat offenders).

Increased Penalties for Organized Events

Drifting performed during organized events in public spaces – such as illegal gatherings or street drifting shows – may be classified as a more serious crime under Article 178c of the Penal Code, potentially resulting in a prison sentence of 3 months to 5 years.

Higher Fines for Violations

The maximum fine for drifting or wheelies has been increased from 5000 zł to 30,000 zł.

License Suspension for Violators

Drivers violating the new prohibitions will face a mandatory 3-month license suspension, according to Article 102, paragraph 1, point 9 of the Act on Drivers, effective March 30, 2026.

Demerit Points Added to Driving Record

In addition to fines and license suspension, drivers will receive 10 demerit points for drifting or wheelies. If the maneuver causes a road hazard, such as a collision, police may impose 12 demerit points, totaling up to 22 points.
