Poland’s 2026 May Holiday: Limited Days Off, Potential for Extended Breaks

Poland’s May 1st and 3rd Constitution Day holidays in 2026 fall on a Friday and Sunday, respectively, offering a short break but opportunities for longer vacations.

2026 May Holiday – Calendar Arrangement

The May holiday remains one of the most anticipated moments on the Polish calendar, marking the symbolic start of the grilling season, short trips, and the first real breath of fresh air after winter.

Limited Holiday Days in 2026

In 2026, Poles aren’t particularly fortunate with the holiday arrangement. May 1st, Labor Day, falls on a Friday, while May 3rd, Constitution Day, falls on a Sunday. This means the May weekend is extended by only one day – Friday.

If May 3rd falls on a Sunday, employees are not entitled to an additional day off according to the law.

Extending the May Holiday

Despite the calendar not being ideal, there’s still a way to extend the break. The simplest method is to submit a request for vacation leave on Thursday, April 30th, 2026, and Monday, May 4th.

This allows for five consecutive days off – from Thursday to Monday.

Short Trips and Increased Costs

This solution is particularly attractive for those planning short trips, so-called city breaks – to the mountains, the seaside, or abroad. However, it’s worth remembering that accommodation and transport prices may be higher than usual during this period.

Turning the Weekend into a 9-Day Vacation

The key to success is a “bridge” before May 1st. Simply submit a vacation request for Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday (April 27th–30th), and the vacation will begin after work on Friday.

A Shorter, Yet Still Attractive, Holiday

Although the 2026 May holiday doesn’t offer as favorable a calendar arrangement as in some previous years, it still provides an opportunity for regeneration and a change of scenery. One day of leave and the long May weekend can significantly improve the comfort of the break.

For those not planning trips, it’s also a good opportunity for local activities – walks, cycling, or meetings with loved ones. Regardless of plans, the May holiday remains one of the most beloved moments of the year.
