Poland’s newest section speed control on the A2 highway spans 17.4 kilometers, where drivers must maintain consistent speeds or face penalties.
Extended Speed Monitoring Systems
Poland continues expanding its network of section speed control systems, with new devices installed not only on highways and expressways but also on selected national and voivodeship roads.
Longest Section on A2 Highway
The country’s longest section speed control operates on the A2 highway between Mińsk Mazowiecki and Janów, monitoring a 17.4 km stretch. Drivers must take at least 7 minutes and 27 seconds to traverse this section legally.
Additional Major Sections
A second extensive section speed control operates on the S7 between Radom Północ and Wolanów, covering 15.9 km with a minimum safe travel time of 7 minutes and 57 seconds.
A third system was recently implemented on the S8 near Nadarzyna, covering 3.2 km. Any vehicle completing this section in less than 1 minute and 36 seconds risks receiving a fine. The speed limits are 120 km/h for passenger cars and 80 km/h for trucks.
How Section Speed Control Functions
Section speed control registers the time a vehicle enters and exits the monitored section. Based on this data, the system calculates the average speed. If the average exceeds the permitted limit, documentation of the violation is automatically generated and processed through the CANARD system.
In practice, a 10 km/h tolerance is applied. The maximum fine for speeding is 2,500 zł, which can reach 5,000 zł for repeat offenders. Drivers can receive up to 15 penalty points.
Effectiveness and Driver Compliance
Unlike traditional speed cameras that capture violations at a single point, section speed control eliminates the possibility of briefly slowing down just before a camera. Drivers must maintain safe speeds throughout the entire monitored road section, which is why these systems generate the most violations among all surveillance devices.
The most effective approach is to maintain a consistent speed at the legal limit. On long stretches, the difference between driving at the speed limit and 10-15 km/h faster is typically just a few seconds, making the risk of substantial fines and penalty points not worth it.
