Polish police confirm data transmission network failure but assure no disruption to operations or citizen safety.
Police Network Outage
Polish police have addressed “appearing public information regarding failures of police information systems” in a social media statement. The police force utilizes multiple independent systems and communication channels in daily operations, which “ensure continuity of tasks – including receiving reports, directing patrols, and conducting interventions.”
“Currently, the failure affects devices in the police data transmission network. Servers on which police systems operate are functioning normally. We preliminarily rule out external interference. Due to the very high complexity of network architecture solutions, diagnosis requires time” – stated in the announcement. At the same time, it was assured that the failure “does not cause paralysis of police actions nor affects citizen safety.”
Cyberattacks on Polish Energy Infrastructure
At the end of December, attacks on Poland’s energy infrastructure occurred. Prime Minister Donald Tusk in mid-January stated that “there are no hard evidence, but much suggests that these attacks were prepared by groups directly linked to Russian services.” New findings from Slovak experts shed more light on the matter.
Sandworm Connection
Researchers have linked targeted attacks on Poland’s energy infrastructure to the Russian group Sandworm, also known as APT44. The evidence includes both the modus operandi of the cybercriminals and similarities in the malicious software code used by the same group over the years.
DynoWiper Software
Software that experts from ESET named DynoWiper was intended to destroy files on attacked computer systems. “However, we have no information about any disruptions caused by this attack” – emphasized Slovak cybersecurity specialists. Polish authorities had also previously stated that attempted attacks were repelled, and the stability of the national energy system remained unaffected throughout.
