Poland’s police have filed a criminal complaint against Confederation MP Sławomir Mentzen for firing a firecracker during Warsaw’s Independence March, initiating legal proceedings.
Charge Filed by Police
The complaint was sent to the Main Police Headquarters, confirming the start of procedures to hold the MP accountable for the alleged wrongdoing. If deemed valid, it will be forwarded to the Attorney General, who can then initiate a parliamentary inquiry.
Mentzen’s Firecracker Incident
Mentzen posted photos on social media showing himself with a lit firecracker while attending the march, an event where the use of pyrotechnics was banned that day.
Wider Enforcement at the March
Police arrested 43 individuals, seized roughly 800 firecrackers, fireworks, and other pyrotechnic devices, and confiscated several knives and stabbings during the post‑march operations.
Confederation Aims to Legalize Firecrackers
Leader Przemysław Wipler announced a draft bill to legalise firecrackers at public gatherings, arguing that controlled, non‑malicious use should be permissible under a rights‑based public life approach.
