Polish Inventors Develop Wheelchair-Bed Hybrid Device

Scientists from the Silesian University of Technology have created a multi-functional device that converts between a wheelchair and a bed for improved patient care.

Innovative Device for People with Disabilities

A special device designed for people with disabilities, or those recovering from medical procedures, has the potential to significantly improve their quality of life, according to Professor Wojciech Wolański from the Faculty of Biomedical Engineering at the Silesian University of Technology.

Professor Wolański and his team have developed the invention, which has been nominated for the “Eureka! Odkrywamy polskie wynalazki” (Eureka! We Discover Polish Inventions) competition organized by Dziennik Gazeta Prawna.

Multi-Functionality is Key

The device, officially named “special mobile device for people with disabilities,” stands out due to its versatility. Professor Wolański explains that most devices serve only one primary function, while theirs functions as both a wheelchair and a bed.

Applications in Healthcare and at Home

The invention can be used in hospitals and medical institutions as a post-operative bed, but also for individuals who are permanently bedridden. It allows for easy transport of patients from bed to another room, or even outdoors in wheelchair mode.

Simple Mechanical Design

The team utilized simple mechanical solutions to allow caregivers to easily adjust the patient’s position. The device features two double mechanisms: a scissor-like mechanism for height adjustment, crucial for bed functionality, and a parallel linkage mechanism to simultaneously recline the backrest and raise the leg support.

This allows for a quick transition between sitting and lying positions.

Affordable Solution

Due to the use of simple solutions, the device is expected to be relatively inexpensive. Professor Wolański anticipates it will cost slightly more than a standard wheelchair, but significantly less than purchasing separate wheelchair and rehabilitation bed.
